How to use the site

Information is generally based around a 'place', which can be a region, province, comarca (county), city, town or village.

  • To see a specific place - type its name into the "Type a placename" box (selecting the name when you see it appear) - the page for that place will be displayed with tabs for information.
  • To browse down through a region - click the "Locations" button and start selecting, or click on the map (hover to see the region's name).

For activities and accomodation - click on the relevant menu button and you will see a list of types of activity/accomodation together with a list places where they occur. Click on the place name for more details.

San Pedro del Pinatar is a municipality in the comarca Mar Menor, situated in the Region of Murcia, Spain.

The municipality is situated between the Mediterranean Sea coast and the Mar Menor ("Little Sea"), a coastal saltwater lagoon which is the largest in Europe. San Pedro del Pinatar occupies a small peninsula with 14 km of coastline between the two seas. The terrain is a mostly low-lying littoral depression, with an average elevation of only 13 m above mean sea level.

Fishing and related processing industries have been a mainstay of the local municipal economy, with tourism and service–related industries playing an ever-increasing role. Salt ponds have been worked in the area since the time of the Roman Empire.

San Pedro del Pinatar continues to be a very popular Spanish holiday destination and the population increases during the summer months as people from Madrid (and other Spaniards) with second homes descend on the area. Lots of free entertainment is provided by the council.

 

Places of Interest: 
  • Museo Arqueológico Etnográfico: Contiene fósiles, objetos paleontológicos, etc. Dispone de una sección sobre arqueología submarina y otra de tipo etnográfico dedicada sobre todo a los últimos siglos (desde s. XVIII). Se encuentra en el palacio del Barón de Benifayó.25
  • Museo del Mar (C/ Ingeniero Lorenzo Morales, 2. Edificio Hogar del Pescador, 2º Dcha.): colecciones de artículos marinos y marineros.
  • Centro de Investigación y Conservación de los Humedales "Las Salinas" (Avda. de Las Salinas s/n): ofrece interesantes exposiciones sobre el parque natural y el trabajo en las salinas.
  • Casa del reloj o Quinta de San Sebastián (Avda. Artero Guirao s/n): un ejemplo de arquitectura modernista. En ella falleció el cuarto y último presidente de la 1ª República Española D. Emilio Castelar y Ripoll. Desde finales del siglo XX se ha reconstruido y convertido en un restaurante.
  • Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol (Plaza de la Constitución): es un templo que comenzó siendo una ermita franciscana en el siglo XVII.
  • Palacio del Barón de Benifayó o de los condes Villar de Felices o Casa de la Rusa (C/ Víctor Pradera s/n): edificio de estilo neomudéjar construido en el siglo XIX por encargo del Barón de Benifayó.
  • Lonja de pescado en Lo Pagán (Explanada de Lo Pagán): puede contemplarse la subasta del pescado al estilo tradicional.
  • Parque natural de las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar
