How to use the site

Information is generally based around a 'place', which can be a region, province, comarca (county), city, town or village.

  • To see a specific place - type its name into the "Type a placename" box (selecting the name when you see it appear) - the page for that place will be displayed with tabs for information.
  • To browse down through a region - click the "Locations" button and start selecting, or click on the map (hover to see the region's name).

For activities and accomodation - click on the relevant menu button and you will see a list of types of activity/accomodation together with a list places where they occur. Click on the place name for more details.

If you can't find what you are looking for, please let us know (use the menu item Contact Us). We'd also like to hear any comments you'd care to make.

Windows 8, Spanish to English (with the extra 'fix'!)

If, like me, you've bought a computer here in Spain then there is a very good chance that you have Windows 8 but in Spanish. The question is how to change this to English - unfortunately the answer is to reinstall Windows8 (not good enough Microsoft!) BUT if you are willing to put up with the system showing the odd Spanish word or phrase then here is how to do it.

There are two steps, firstly:

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Click "Region and Languages".
  3. Under the Formats tab choose "English (United Kingdom)".
  4. Click on the "Location" tab
  5. For current location, select "United Kingdom"
  6. Click "OK"

.. and secondly (The above is what you will find all over the Internet BUT here's the extra bit they always seem to miss out!)

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Click "Region and Languages".
  3. Click "Region"
  4. Click on the "Administrative" tab
  5. Under "Language for non-unicode programs", select "Change system locale"
  6. Select "United Kingdom"
  7. Select "OK"

Personally I find it ludicrous that Microsoft simply doesn't understand the difference between "Location" and "Language"; who knows, by Windows 9 (Azure) the penny may have dropped but somehow I doubt it.

Note: as I mentioned at the start, I've noticed that there are still (!) parts of W8 that appear in the original installed language (for instance on start up I get "Pagina principal" across the screen), but nothing is of any great note.
